Well, let me start out by saying that I have been hit by high voltage from neons, flybacks, and alot from laser power systems. I am still here however there was always someone there with me to shut down power or kick me away from harm. High voltage will not really grab you and cause you to hold on as much as it will throw you across the room, the lower voltages such as house wiring will cause you to hold on. The 60Hz is where the real danger is and also the current (I1). Most tesla coils operate in the KHz range and will cause burns rather than death, however NEVER rule out lethal shocks when operating a tesla coil. The primary circuit uses very powerfull capacitors and these caps store a great deal of I1 that certainly will kill you, even the high frequency voltages are lethal so keep hands clear and always follow the rules. 1) keep one hand in your pocket when dealing with high voltage 2) If you make an adjustment on the coil or primary unplug the power and bring the plug with you ,make sure you hold it in your hand, also discharge the caps before adjusting the primary. 3) It is always a good idea to have a friend there with you. (someone to administer CPR and bring you to the ER). 4) Wear good rubber sole shoes. For more detailed information look here.
